About Climate friendly

Scientists are adamant — radical shifts in our eating patterns towards plant-based diets are necessary to combat climate change. It’s been estimated that at least a quarter of greenhouse gas emissions emanate from food production, with more than half of these emissions coming from animal products.

In contrast, a climate-friendly diet contains little to no meat, dairy, or other animal products — instead, they are rich in foods with lower carbon and water footprints, reducing the environmental impact.

Not only are climate-friendly diets beneficial for the environment, but they are typically better for your health — a win-win for you and the planet. As plant-based foods typically have lower carbon and water footprints, climate-friendly diets are inherently higher in the most nutritious foods such as fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds, and legumes.

That’s why we’ve put together this collection of climate-friendly foods, which must have either a very low to low carbon footprint or a very low to low water footprint to be included. Additionally, neither footprint can be rated more than moderate, and all products in this collection are free of palm oil. At GreenChoice, our Environmental Footprint rating for products is based on an estimate of the greenhouse gas emissions emitted throughout the lifecycle of each ingredient, as well as an estimate of the blue, green, and grey water used throughout the lifecycle of each ingredient.

*Keep in mind that products’ packaging is not yet considered in our Environmental Footprint rating. We recognize the importance of this, and we’re working diligently on it — stay tuned! In the meantime, check out our FAQ page for more info.
